I woke in a groggy state in my hammock, my stomach aching I hoped from the jaguar meat and not from something more lethal. I took my time sitting up, feeling worse than ever as I reached for something to drink in the muggy darkness.

It had to have been the curse under my breath that alerted him. He struck a match, so that a bleak light filled the hut. When a candle flared to life, I realized it wasn’t indigestion that had brought Raul into my dreams that night.

I’d anticipated changes in his appearances. Leathery skin beaten by the sun’s unrelenting radiation. Cheeks sunken from an exotic diet of ants and grubs. Perhaps a missing tooth from a recent bout of scurvy?

Unfortunately, he looked adorably the same.

“Hello, Beth,” he said. “What took you so long, babe?”
